Cashless B2B trading in eight countries, shipped and maintained since 2020.

BBX members trade goods and services against digital trade credits instead of cash. We built the member app, the web platform and the admin panel behind them — and have kept them shipping through five and a half years of continuous releases, from launch in September 2020 to version 7.19.

Structural fact — products built

Members, trade volume and credit balances are the exchange's numbers to share, and they are not on this page. What is on this page is what was built, what has been maintained, and the public release record that shows it.

The Context

A trade exchange where the currency is what your business already has.

BBX has run a business-to-business trade exchange since 1993. Members sell into the network and are paid in digital trade credits rather than cash, then spend those credits with other members — turning idle capacity and slow-moving stock into buying power, and taking pressure off working capital. BBXConnect is the platform that community trades on: a marketplace, a business directory, an events calendar and a transaction ledger, in the members' pockets and on the web.

It runs across eight countries — Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Costa Rica and the United Kingdom — each with its own members, its own events and its own local currency sitting alongside the trade balance.

The Challenge

The hard part of a platform this old is not building it. It is keeping it shipping.

A trade exchange is a ledger with a marketplace attached, and the balances in it are money to the businesses holding them. That sets the bar for every release: a member's trade position has to survive the update, and a transaction has to mean the same thing in the app, on the web and in the admin panel.

Then the platform has to keep doing that for years. Five and a half of them, so far. Every annual OS release, every store policy change, every framework version that reaches end of life arrives on someone else's schedule, and none of them care that a feature roadmap is already full. Most apps quietly stop shipping somewhere in that stretch — the long tail of dead listings on both stores is what that looks like.

And it has to be true in eight countries at once. A member in Sydney and a member in Kuala Lumpur are on the same platform with different currencies, different directories and different events, so a feature is not finished when it works — it is finished when it works everywhere it has to.

Our Approach

Build it so it can keep being changed.

A product that has to run for years is a different brief from one that has to launch. These are the decisions that let this one still be shipping in its sixth year.

Trade credits and cash in the same transaction.

A member's screen carries a trade-dollar balance and a cash amount side by side, because that is how these deals actually settle — mostly in credits, with a cash component for fees. Modelling both on one transaction record is what keeps the app, the web platform and the admin panel telling the same story about a trade.

One member record, four ways to use it.

The marketplace, the business directory, the events calendar and the transaction ledger are views onto the same membership rather than four products stapled together — which is why a new module could be added years in without renegotiating the ones already there.

Country as a dimension, not a deployment.

Members switch market from inside the product, and listings, directories and events follow. Eight countries run on one codebase and one backend rather than eight forks, so a fix ships everywhere at once instead of eight times.

Shipped continuously, not in big bangs.

Two major versions and a long run of point releases, delivered as a steady cadence rather than annual rewrites. Small releases are what make platform deprecations and OS upgrades routine maintenance instead of a crisis project.

The same team, still on it.

The engineers who know why a decision was made in 2020 are the ones shipping in 2026. On a ledger product, that continuity is a safety feature — most of the expensive mistakes come from someone changing a rule they did not know existed.

What This Means in Practice

What this means in practice.

01

The platform has shipped continuously since September 2020 and is on version 7.19 — a public, timestamped record of a product that never went unmaintained.

02

Two major versions were delivered without the rebuild-from-scratch that usually ends a platform's life at that age.

03

Eight countries run on one codebase and one backend, so a fix or a feature reaches every market in the same release.

04

Trade credits and cash sit on the same transaction record, which is what keeps a member's position identical in the app, on the web and in the admin panel.

05

Modules added years apart — directory, events, billing, chat, blogs, QR payments — went onto the same member record rather than beside it.

06

The exchange's own team runs listings, members and reconciliation from the admin panel across every market.

07

The engineers shipping in 2026 are the ones who made the decisions in 2020, so institutional knowledge about a financial ledger has stayed in the room.

Need a product that is still shipping in five years, not just launched in three months?

Long-Term App Maintenance — Questions Founders Ask Us

Both, and the second is the part most agencies quietly stop doing. BBX Connect has been shipping since September 2020 and is on version 7.19 — five and a half years of releases on the same product, with the same team. Launch is where an app's real cost starts: OS releases, store policy changes, framework end-of-life and a roadmap that keeps going. We take maintenance engagements as ongoing work with a real cadence, not as an emergency service you call when something breaks.

Small, frequent releases and a team that remembers why the code is the way it is. Every year brings an OS version that deprecates something, a store policy that requires a new declaration, and a dependency that stops being supported — none of which are optional and none of which arrive on your schedule. Handled as routine releases, they are maintenance; saved up for a rewrite, they become the reason a platform dies at year four.

Yes — a good part of our long-running work is exactly that: our engineers alongside your team, on your board and in your review process. It suits products that already have a roadmap and need capacity rather than direction, and it is how several of our longest engagements have run, BBX Connect among them.

By treating balances as records rather than numbers on a screen. Every movement is a transaction with a history, reconciliation is a first-class part of the admin tooling rather than a spreadsheet someone keeps, and the same record is what the app, the web platform and the back office all read. On BBX that also means holding trade credits and cash on the same transaction, because a real settlement is usually part of each.

Country becomes a dimension of the data rather than a separate build. BBX Connect runs eight markets — Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Costa Rica and the UK — on one codebase and one backend, with listings, directories, events and currency following the member's market. The alternative, a fork per country, multiplies every future release by the number of countries you have.
