Structural fact — feature built

Weather Lite is our own app. The download count is Google's own figure from the Play Store listing; everything else on this page is what was built and why it was built that way.

Weather Lite app screens — current conditions for Plano and Faisalabad with local time, hourly forecasts, a 7-day list, app settings for focus and units, and saved cities
The Context

Building a weather app people open for the reading, not the features.

Weather Lite shows the weather where you are the moment it opens: a big current temperature, today's high and low, the conditions, wind, humidity, UV and rain, and one line of advice — take a light jacket, drink lots of water. Below it sit an hourly graph with the chance of rain, a 7-day forecast, sunrise, sunset and day length, feels-like and pressure.

It is one of the apps Next Level Software builds and publishes under its own name, and the most installed of them, with 10K+ downloads on Google Play. A redesign added a world clock for every saved city, four focus layouts, home-screen widgets and silent background updates, while keeping the download small and the start-up fast.

The Challenge

Users wanted detailed local weather without the clutter of large weather apps.

The big weather apps have grown into media products: radar layers, news, video, sponsored cards and ads stacked around the one number someone opened the app to see. They are heavy to download, slow to start and spinning on a pull-to-refresh at exactly the moment you want an answer.

A lighter app still has to be complete. The current conditions need wind, humidity, UV, pressure and feels-like, not just a temperature; the hourly forecast has to be precise enough to plan around; and the reading has to be current without the user doing anything — even with a weak connection.

Our Approach

One clean screen of detail, kept current in the background.

Weather Lite leads with the reading, puts every detail one scroll below it, and keeps itself up to date so there is never a spinner to wait on.

The reading first.

The home screen opens on a large current temperature, today's range and conditions, with wind, humidity, UV and rain directly underneath — and a one-line suggestion for the day in plain words.

Hourly detail you can plan around.

An hourly graph with the chance of rain, a 7-day forecast with highs and lows, and feels-like, pressure, sunrise, sunset and day length below it.

Your location, and the cities you care about.

Weather follows the device's location, and saved cities sit in tabs with their own live local time and UTC offset — a world clock built into the weather.

Four focus layouts.

The home screen can lead with Weather, Weather + Time, World Clock or Sun & UV — the last with a UV dial, sun-path daylight arc and moon phase.

Updates in the background, works offline.

Conditions refresh silently in the background, home-screen widgets stay current, and the last reading is still there without a connection.

Units the user chooses.

°C or °F, km/h or mph, mm or inches, and 12- or 24-hour time — set once in settings alongside the saved cities.

What This Means in Practice

What this means in practice.

01

Users see the temperature, wind, humidity, UV and rain for their location the moment the app opens.

02

The hourly forecast and chance of rain are precise enough to plan the day around.

03

A one-line suggestion turns the numbers into what to wear or do.

04

Saved cities show their weather and local time side by side.

05

Widgets and background updates keep the reading current without a pull-to-refresh.

06

The app stays small and fast — and 10K+ people have installed it from Google Play.

Under the Hood

Built for Every Platform

Weather Lite is a single Flutter app for Android: it reads the device's location, fetches the forecast, and keeps the last conditions on the phone for widgets and offline use.

By building it around the reading instead of a feed. Weather Lite opens on the current conditions and the next few hours, leaves out news, video and radar layers, and refreshes in the background so the user never waits on a spinner — which keeps the download small and the start-up fast.

From a weather API, fetched for the device's location and each saved city. Weather Lite shows current conditions, an hourly forecast with rain chance and a 7-day forecast, and keeps the last reading on the phone so widgets and offline use still work.

Yes. Weather Lite builds a world clock into the weather: every saved city has its own tab with live local time and UTC offset, and one of the four focus layouts puts the world clock first.

No. Weather Lite updates silently in the background, so its home-screen widgets stay current without the user opening the app or pulling to refresh.

Less than most apps, because there is no backend of your own to build — the cost sits in the design, the forecast logic, widgets and background updates. An app like Weather Lite is scoped and quoted fixed-price after a free scoping call.
